Pine Island Road (CR 78) Shared Use Path Feasibility Study
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), District One, began a Feasibility Study for a proposed shared use path on Pine Island Road in Lee County in December 2020. This potential future path would add approximately 5 miles of pathway from Stringfellow Road, through Matlacha, to Veterans Memorial Parkway in Cape Coral. Through public outreach efforts and coordination with Lee County, The City of Cape Coral, the Lee County MPO, and the Project Advisory Group, FDOT has determined that in addition to determining the pathway feasibility, the scope of this project should be broadened. After analyzing over 900 questionnaire responses, FDOT concluded that the improvements should be approached more holistically and evaluate potential “Complete Streets” concepts, especially through Matlacha. For more information about Complete Streets, visit http://www.flcompletestreets.com/.
The purpose of this project is to determine the feasibility of incorporating Complete Streets elements on the corridor to provide a safe and viable travel option for both motorized and non-motorized commuters and recreational users of Pine Island Road, while minimizing effects to the natural, cultural, social, and physical environment. The goal of this study is to develop feasible alternatives to be evaluated in a future PD&E Phase.
Thank you for participating in the Summer 2021 Questionnaire. Approximately 900 of you shared your input with us!
