About
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District One is conducting a Design-Build project to widen River Road (SR 777) from north of US 41 to south of I-75. The project limits fall within Sarasota County. FDOT determined that widening SR 777 from two lanes to six lanes from north of US 41 to south of I-75 will meet travel demand and enhance safety along this section. The project length is approximately 5.06 miles.
In addition to building a new six-lane roadway, the contractor is constructing drainage and safety improvements, shared-use paths, wildlife crossings, signing and pavement markings, lighting, signalization, and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) features with raised medians and intersection improvements.

Public Involvement
The Florida Department of Transportation District One held a public meeting on January 27, 2022 to share information about a design-build project to widen River Road (SR 777) from north of US 41 to just south of I-75 in Sarasota County. The design included widening the road to four lanes from I-75 to Center Rd., and six-lanes from Center Road to US 41.
In November 2024, a public meeting was held to share information about the Department’s decision to add two more lanes (one in each direction) from Center Road to I-75. More information on the reevaluation and public hearing held on November 21, 2024 can be found here. With this decision, River Road is now being constructed as a six-lane roadway from US 41 to I-75.
