South Florida Avenue (SR 37) Road Diet Pilot Project
Need for Improvements
In cooperation with the City of Lakeland, FDOT studied current and future traffic and developed an alternative roadway configuration for South Florida Avenue. FDOT will conduct a Road Diet Test and Traffic Study using the new configuration. FDOT will conduct a lane elimination test for approximately one year. The test will consist of a lane closure of the outside travel lanes for both northbound and southbound directions from Ariana Street to Lime Street. South Florida Avenue will be reduced from a five-lane configuration to a three-lane configuration by using a concrete traffic separator to close the outside lanes (see diagram below).
The concept would remove the outside travel lanes (next to sidewalks) to accommodate the following:
- Widen the remaining travel lanes and turning lane to the appropriate widths
- Use the remaining space to improve safety conditions for pedestrians and motorists.
Currently, the design of the permanent improvements for South Florida Avenue are not funded.
