The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), District One, is designing improvements to State Road (SR) 739 in Lee County. This project is intended to improve safety, enhance traffic flow, and reduce crashes by constructing a continuous raised median, with bi-directional and full median openings, from the Caloosahatchee River to north of SR 78. Proposed improvements also consist of milling and resurfacing of the roadway. Two pedestrian hybrid beacons will be provided south of Pondella Road and at Mariana Avenue. Additional improvements include upgrading the traffic signal at Pondella Road; providing upgrades in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA); and lighting, signing and pavement markings, and drainage improvements.

Public Involvement

FDOT held a public meeting (online and in-person) on Thursday, September 15, 2022 to present project information and provide an opportunity for the public to offer feedback. Although the meeting comment period is officially closed, copies of the public meeting materials are available for viewing in the Project Documents section. A copy of the public meeting video presentation is available for viewing in the Project Videos section.

FDOT solicits public participation without regard to race, color, national origin, age, sex, religion, disability, or family status.

FAQs

Where will the Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons (PHBs) be located?

  • The new Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons (PHBs) will be located at Mariana Avenue and East North Shore Avenue

How will the Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons improve safety in the long-term?

  • Nearly 74 percent of pedestrian fatalities occur at non-intersection locations, and vehicle speeds are often a major contributing factor. As a safety strategy to address this pedestrian crash risk, the PHB is an intermediate option between a flashing beacon and a full pedestrian signal because it assigns right of way and provides positive stop control. It also allows motorists to proceed once the pedestrian has cleared their side of the travel lane(s), reducing vehicle delay.

    • Crews are continuing to work on the final striping operations. During this work, construction crews will implement intermittent lane closures in specific work zones only, outside of peak travel times. These intermittent closures are not anticipated to impede traffic and will be used on an as-needed basis.
    • These lane closures will occur during the daytime and nighttime/overnight hours.
    • Please note that the construction schedule may change due to weather or other unexpected conditions.
