About the Project

SR 80

The design project prepares plans that a contractor will use to build the job. Proposed improvements include widening the existing two-lane road, a 6.4 mile segment to a four-lane divided roadway. Over the next two years, the design consultant will develop right-of-way maps, develop roadway design plans and obtain permits. Design plans will include construction details to build two new 12-foot lanes to the north of the existing roadway. These lanes will become the new westbound lanes. Plans also include resurfacing the existing SR 80 lanes to become the new eastbound lanes. The project includes a 64-foot median separating eastbound and westbound lanes with an eight-foot inside shoulder and an 8 to 10-foot outside shoulder. The roadway is being designed for a 60 mph speed limit.

Median openings

With addition of a median through this segment, FDOT develops a plan for median openings and turn lanes. How median openings are spaced and where they are placed assist in more efficient traffic movement on the highway, reduction of crashes, and enhanced safety for pedestrians. Median openings allow access to side streets and allow left turn and U-turn opportunities with the benefit of removing turning traffic from through lanes of travel. During the design phase, we will update the website with the latest median opening information. Again, early public involvement and comments are important during development of the median plan. Comments suggesting changes made late in the process cannot be incorporated into design plans.
