Project Description

The Florida Department of Transportation is conducting a safety improvement project on State Road 867/McGregor Boulevard from Cypress Lake Drive to Edinburgh Drive. This safety project consists of roadway median improvements intended to enhance safety by implementing access control. The project includes providing a raised median from Cypress Lake Drive to just south of College Parkway, median openings at intersections, and updates to signal timing to allow for the increased U-turn traffic at all signalized intersections. The project is expected to be complete by spring 2024. The project cost is $3.2 million. B

Current conditions: Within the study area, SR 867 is a four-lane roadway with a center, two-way left turn lane. The posted speed is 45 miles per hour. There are sidewalks on both sides of the roadway but no bike lanes.

Design: The updated design proposes removing the center turn lane and adding a raised median with extended turn lanes and median openings to accommodate high volume commercial and residential motorists. The exhibit boards are included for both the original and July 14th meeting.  Specifically, the revised plans include:

  • Extending the left turn lane approximately 250’ beyond what was shown on the original concept/ exhibit board for added left turn storage to accommodate U-turn traffic. Also, signal timing will be adjusted to accommodate the U-turn traffic.
  • Add a full median opening with left turn lanes to access North Town and River Drive and the Design Center commercial property. Adding a southbound directional median opening with left turn lane to access the Key West Plaza commercial property.
  • Construct improvements along Camelot Drive to build out the left and right turn lanes, extending the queue, and cleaning the right of way for better sight lines. Adjusting signal timing to accommodate the U-turn traffic.
  • Extend the northbound left turn lane approximately 300’ beyond that shown on the original concept/ exhibit board for added left turn storage to accommodate U-turn traffic. Adjusting signal timing to accommodate the U-turn traffic. Remove the proposed median north of College Pointe Parkway. Correcting the westbound right turn lane geometry to better facilitate U-turns for southbound traffic. Remove a driveway access point at the request of the owner to avoid U-turn through traffic.
Public Involvement

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District One invites the public to attend a follow-up public meeting on Thursday, July 14, 2022, to share design revisions made for safety improvements on State Road (SR) 867/McGregor Boulevard from Cypress Lake Drive to Edinburgh Drive in Lee County. These revisions are based on public comments received during the first public meeting held in January 2022.

An in-person Open House will be held from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. so attendees can view project exhibits and speak with FDOT staff. The in-person meeting will be held at Florida Southwestern State College, 8099 College Parkway, U Building, Room 102, Fort Myers, FL 33919. The same presentation will be shown to virtual attendees shortly after the meeting opens at 5:30 p.m.

For additional convenience, attendees may also participate remotely using an electronic device such as a computer, tablet, or smartphone. Please register in advance at https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/4960586769853649164  and fill out the form.

Following the public meeting, all meeting exhibits, presentation and comment form will be available on this project webpage along with original January materials. Comments received by July 24, 2022, will become part of the public record. Questions may be submitted to Director of Public Information Andy Orrell at Andy.Orrell@dot.state.fl.us or to FDOT Project Manager Katherine Chinault at Katherine.Chinault@dot.state.fl.us
