Project Information

The intent of this project is to enhance safety for all users of the roadway (including motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists) on this northbound, three-lane, one-way section of Tamiami Trail (US 41) and advance goals of walkability and strategic investment/development within Downtown Punta Gorda as set forth in the City of Punta Gorda’s Comprehensive Plan and Plan Punta Gorda – 2019 Citywide Master Plan.

The Florida Department of Transportation conducted extensive public outreach throughout the duration of the study to help determine the best options to consider in order to maximize the results and value of the Resurfacing, Restoration, and Rehabilitation project. Potential elements that were considered include (but are not limited to) strategies to maintain consistent travel time, minimize lane changing, discourage aggressive driving, enhance pedestrian and bicycle facilities along with connections to existing area pathways and trails.

This study combined multiple project phases, including Planning, Project Development and Environment (PD&E), and Design to accelerate the project schedule and maximize the value of the project.

1. Paving (August - November)

• Crews are working on placing the final asphalt layer across the corridor

• Work is underway on U.S. 17 and will shift to U.S. 41 northbound (NB) next.

  • WHAT TO EXPECT:

    • Nighttime paving work

    • Lane closures in active work zone

    • Slow- moving construction vehicles

2.  Surface Prep and Rumble Strip Installation (Late August - Early September)

• Crews will sweep, prepare the surface, and install rumble strips on U.S. 17

  • WHAT TO EXPECT:

    • Small, short-term nighttime lane closures

3. Final Striping, Lane Configuration, and Retta Esplanade Signal (September - October)

• Permanent striping will be applied across the corridor, including the final NB U.S. 41 lane configuration.

• Striping will occur in phases, and drivers will begin seeing updated lane guidance as the corridor transitions into its permanent layout.

  • Retta Esplanade Signal

    • The Retta Esplanade signal is currently being prepared for activation.

    • Because the signal heads are already installed for the final lane arrangement, activation is expected to align closely with the completion of final striping.

    • FDOT and the City will announce the activation date once confirmed.

  • WHAT TO EXPECT:

    • Nighttime striping operations

    • Lane shifts as new markings are installed

4.  Traffic Monitoring Loops and Thermoplastic Markings (Mid-September - October)

• After the new asphalt has cured, crews will install traffic sensors (used for signal timing and monitoring) and final long-lasting pavement markings. 

  • Public Impact:

    • Occasional nighttime lane closures and brief work zones in finished paved areas

5. Corridor-Wide Signal Retiming (October - November)

• Charlotte County - supported by FDOT - will adjust traffic-signal timing along U.S. 41 and U.S. 17 to make sure all signals and roundabout work smoothly together.

  • WHAT TO EXPECT:

    • Minor temporary flow changes during tuning

    • Improved consistency once timing is finalized

All activities are weather-dependent and subject to change based on paving progress, asphalt curing time, and contractor scheduling. Updates will be provided as the corridor advances toward final completion.
