About

Project Information

The intent of this project is to enhance safety for all users of the roadway (including motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists) on this northbound, three-lane, one-way section of Tamiami Trail (US 41) and advance goals of walkability and strategic investment/development within Downtown Punta Gorda as set forth in the City of Punta Gorda’s Comprehensive Plan and Plan Punta Gorda – 2019 Citywide Master Plan.

The Florida Department of Transportation conducted extensive public outreach throughout the duration of the study to help determine the best options to consider in order to maximize the results and value of the Resurfacing, Restoration, and Rehabilitation project. Potential elements that were considered include (but are not limited to) strategies to maintain consistent travel time, minimize lane changing, discourage aggressive driving, enhance pedestrian and bicycle facilities along with connections to existing area pathways and trails.

This study combined multiple project phases, including Planning, Project Development and Environment (PD&E), and Design to accelerate the project schedule and maximize the value of the project.

Public Involvement

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), District One, hosted a public meeting for the Northbound Tamiami Trail (US 41/SR 45) Complete Street Improvements (Financial Project No.: 441524-1-32-01). The project specifically includes roadway, pedestrian, and bicycle safety improvements along Northbound Tamiami Trail from William Street to Peace River Bridge in Downtown Punta Gorda, Charlotte County. The public meeting was held to present information and gather public input on the proposed design of the improvements.

There were two ways to participate in the public meeting: attend the in-person event or register for and join the live online (virtual) event.

In-Person Event: The in-person event was scheduled for Thursday, January 26, 2023, at the Charlotte Harbor Event and Conference Center, 75 Taylor St, Punta Gorda, FL 33950. The “open house” event took place from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Live Online (Virtual) Event: The live online (virtual) event was scheduled for Tuesday, January 31, 2023, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Please register to attend at bit.ly/TamiamiTrailPublicMeeting. The virtual event could also be accessed online through the project website at https://www.swflroads.com/project/441524-1. Once registered, attendees received a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting online. Please note, Internet Explorer cannot be used to register or attend the live online (virtual) event.

All meeting materials are available online for viewing through the project website starting January 19, 2023. A copy of these materials was also displayed at the in-person and live online (virtual) events.

The same material was presented at both events. You may choose any combination of the provided options to review the materials and submit your comments.
