Southbound Lane on the SR 31 Wilson Pigott Bridge Remains Closed Detour in Place for Alternate Route
LEE COUNTY, Fla. – The southbound lane on the SR 31 Wilson Pigott Bridge near Fort Myers will remain closed Wednesday, September 10, as maintenance crews continue making emergency repairs. FDOT will provide updates as progress continues and will notify the public as soon as the bridge is reopened to southbound traffic. For the latest travel information and real-time traffic updates, drivers can visit FL511.com.
Drivers should expect delays and encouraged to follow detour signs, use caution in the area, and allow for extra time to reach their destination. (See attachment for detour)
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is committed to keeping motorists safe while emergency repairs are underway. To ensure the safety of drivers and prevent potential damage to vehicles, southbound traffic is being detoured from Bayshore Road (SR 78) to I-75. The detour will remain while repairs continue.
The closure of the southbound lane is necessary as FDOT crews make critical repairs to the bridge’s steel grid deck in the main span of the bridge, which is damaged and requiring immediate attention.
Crews are reinforcing the bridge deck by welding or bolting a larger steel plate in place to make it safe for southbound traffic to resume.
Traffic control measures remain in place and will stay active until the work is complete.
