FORT MYERS, Fla.– Emergency repairs to the steel grid deck on the Wilson Pigott drawbridge will require temporary traffic impacts beginning this afternoon and continuing overnight, according to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). Several welds in the southbound lane have broken and must be rewelded to maintain the safe operation of the bridge.

Within the next two hours, maintenance crews will lower the drawbridge traffic gates for up to 15 minutes to complete interim repairs to the steel grid deck.

Beginning at 7 p.m. this evening, the southbound lane will be closed to allow crews to perform permanent repairs. Traffic will be maintained in both directions through a flagging operation. Crews are expected to complete the work by 4 a.m., with all southbound lanes reopened before dawn.

Motorists should anticipate brief delays and use caution when traveling through the area.
