About
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), District One, expects to begin milling and resurfacing State Road (S.R.) 72 / Clark Road in Sarasota County from U.S. 41 to Derek Avenue in late summer 2026. The purpose of the project is to extend the service life of the existing roadway and improve safety along the corridor. The project consists of repaving the roadway from U.S. 41 (S.R. 45) to Derek Avenue. FDOT will also construct access management improvements from Swift Road to Sawyer Road under FPID 447887-1. This work will be constructed concurrently with the work under FPID 449122-1. The intent of the improvements is to enhance traffic flow and reduce crashes by replacing the existing center two-way left turn lane with a raised median and reducing lane widths. Additional improvements include construction of one or more mid-block pedestrian crossings , striping, signal, and lighting upgrades.
Public Involvement
FDOT held a public meeting (online and in-person) on Thursday, March 28, 2024, to present project information and provide an opportunity for the public to offer feedback.

Improvements include median modifications, lighting, signalization, drainage, curb and gutter and sidewalk improvements within the project limits. Additional work will include a mid-block pedestrian crossing to enhance pedestrian safety. The project spans just over 3.83 miles with an estimated completion of late 2027.
- Motorists can expect nighttime lane closures throughout the project limits.
- Motorists may experience uneven lanes within the project limits during construction.
- Pedestrians may experience detours while sidewalks are under construction.
- Speed limits will be reduced to 35 MPH.
- Please watch for workers and use caution when navigating an active construction zone.
- Estimated completion is late 2027.
