About
Safety improvements along US 17 from Havendale Boulevard / MLK Boulevard to Brigham Road in Winter Haven began in July 2022. Project Improvements include:
- Add 6-foot sidewalks along both sides of US 17
- Install new Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons (PHB) also known as High-Intensity Activated CrossWalk Signals (HAWK) with a raised pedestrian refuge in the median at New Beginnings High School
- Remove paved shoulder on the west side of US 17 from Avenue V NW to Avenue W
- Install new curb and gutter and repair existing curb and gutter along both sides of US 17
- Modify entrances at several existing driveways to bring them to current standards
- Upgrade transit stops
- Install lighting and upgrade signal equipment
- Improve drainage

The contractor is waiting on delivery of materials to complete the new pedestrian hybrid beacon at the New Beginnings High School. Delivery is tentatively scheduled for August 2023 with the new beacon completed by fall of 2023.
